Show #006: Security advice from Microsoft and legal advice from Forbes Solicitors
Sep 20th, 2007 by Jon Coulter
This week I interview two guests who offer business advice in the areas of online security and smoking at work.
My first interview is with Ed Gibson - Chief Security Advisor at Microsoft UK. Ed was a Special Agent with the FBI for 20 years, including a posting at the US Embassy in London where he acted as the single-point of contact for all security services regarding cybercrime. Ed’s current role at Microsoft UK sees him advising employees, customers and partners on the most effective ways to have a safe online experience.
He shares his experience with us and offers the following advice to keep your business secure online:
- USE ANTI-MALWARE SOFTWARE - install virus protection, have an active firewall and ensure that updates are downloaded regularly
- THINK SECURITY - use strong passwords, take special care of equipment such as laptops and secure wireless networks
- DON’T BECOME COMPLACENT- beware of phishing emails from people pretending to be your bank and make sure you BACK-UP, BACK-UP, BACK-UP
Ed also suggests the following websites for further information:
www.chambertechnologyzone.co.uk
The restaurant tip if you’re ever visiting Washington DC is The Old Ebbtt Grill - fantastic!
My second interview this week is with Peter Byrne - Partner and Employment Law specialist at Forbes Solicitors, one of the North West’s most successful law firms.
Peter outlines the impact that new smoking legislation is having in business and advises us on the key steps necessary to stay on the right side of the law. His tips include:
- ENSURE YOUR SIGNAGE IS IN PLACE- you could be heavily fined if you neglect your signage
- HAVE A CLEARLY DEFINED NO SMOKING POLICY - consult with your employees when defining your policy and ensure that you communicate clearly what is expected and ramifications for non-compliance
